The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team hosted their final home event of their inaugural season, a tournament Saturday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Golden Hawk girls won the team championship with 138 points, North Scott was second at 121.5. Mid-Prairie had two champions on the day with Gabi Robertson pinning her way to the title at 100lbs including a championship match fall over Hailey Kemper of Fort Madison in 2:30. Ellie Brenneman recorded a pair of pins en route to the title, scoring a championship bout fall over Tabitha Skyles of North Scott in 1:13. The WACO Warriors were seventh of 14 teams with their 72 points. The Warriors crowned one champion on the day with Rylee Rice taking home gold at 110. She pinned her way through the tournament including a title match fall over Avala Faber of North Scott in just 58 seconds. She spoke with KCII Sports after the tournament about her day. “The toughest match was probably my second match. That was probably my quickest match, but, mentally, I thought out of everyone that’s who would have beaten me, so I was getting in my head about it. (Winning the tournament) feels very good. I hadn’t done it yet, so it feels very nice.”
Other top WACO finishes included runner-up for Bralyyn Wagler at 235 and third for Grace Fort at 190.
The Washington Demons were 10th of 14 teams with 36 points. The Demons saw Teegan Sulentich win the championship at 155lbs after a 3-0 day. She spoke with KCII Sports about getting to the top of the podium. “My hardest match was my semifinals match. My coaches had been talking about her and how she is supposed to be one of my harder matches this season. I was trying to get an outside shot. I ended up pinning her. It was just a half nelson, that’s my ‘go-to’. It feels really good (to win the championship) especially having all of my friends from other schools cheer me on as I step on the podium.”
Other Washington finishes included fifth for Jillian Langstraat and sixth for Jenna Bose.
