Andy Harter, a 19-year veteran teacher at Sigourney High School, was diagnosed with ALS in October of 2022. Following the news, Sigourney Schools, along with the community, wanted to show their support for the long-time history teacher and coach. Earlier this month, they did just that.

On the morning of January 7, Sigourney Schools hosted a White Buffalo Fun Run for Harter, who coached track and cross country at the school. Later that afternoon, a soup luncheon and silent auction were held. The series of fundraisers collected over $10,000, with all of the proceeds going towards Harter’s medical expenses and travel costs.

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a degenerative disease with no known cure. Despite his diagnosis, Harter, who currently teaches special education in Waterloo, keeps an optimistic outlook on life and praised the Sigourney community for their love and support.
