The biggest games of the season in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North basketball went the way of the undefeated teams, as the Winfield-Mount Union girls and the WACO boys stayed perfect with victories last night in Wayland. WMU started the night by taking a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter in the girls’ game. WACO would hang around and cut the deficit to eight going into halftime, but the 10th-ranked team in Class 1A outscored the Warriors 22-4 in the third period to pull away for good, as the Wolves went on to win 61-40.

Winfield-Mount Union senior guard Keetyn Townsley kept up her strong scoring pace of late by leading the team with 16 points. Senior forward Bradie Buffington add 15 points as the Wolves improve to 16-0. WACO senior star Ellah Kissell had scored at least 28 points in her last three games, but despite a solid effort by pouring in 19, it wasn’t enough to keep the Warriors’ 10-game win streak from being snapped, as they fall to 9-2 in the Super Conference North and 12-3 overall.

Third-ranked WACO raced out to a commanding 23-7 lead to start the boys’ game and went into the half up 24. Winfield-Mount Union would use a third-quarter run to slice the deficit down to nine, but the Warriors closed the game as strong as they started it and claimed a 66-48 victory.

Junior Hunter Hughes again led WACO in scoring with 14 points, but it was Chase Waterhouse who provided a key boost with 11 points off the bench. Senior Simeon Reichenbach added 10 as the Warriors move to 14-0. WMU junior Cam Buffington had his typical big night with a game-high 18 points, while junior Carter Loyd and sophomore Jake Edwards both scored in double figures and combined for 22 points, but the Wolves still drop to 10-2 in conference play and 11-3 overall. While both Winfield-Mount Union teams next host Wapello on Friday, both WACO squads are next in action Friday at Columbus.
