Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams took to the wrestling mat for duals last night. It was another dominant night for the Highland Huskies, who didn’t lose any of their three home duals in Riverside. Highland bested Pekin 34-12 and edged the WACO Warriors 39-30 after taking a draw at 36 all with New London. The Huskies’ two state-ranked wrestlers both won a pair of bouts, as senior Carlos Valenzuela pinned both of his opponents at 132 pounds, and junior Luke Guseman did the same at 120. Other Highland wrestlers to win were sophomore Landon Bell at 106 lbs; freshman Brock Thomann at 126; junior Jack Peiffer at 145; junior Remington Fields at 152; and sophomore Isaac Kleese at 182.
WACO won its other two duals at Highland, defeating New London 42-36 and knocking off Pekin 51-12. The most productive night for the Warriors belonged to junior John Mclaughlin, who pinned both his opponents at 120 lbs. Senior Drew Diers won a 10-4 decision at 220, while senior Brian Neal picked up a pin at 195. Both WACO and Highland next wrestle tomorrow at the Louisa-Muscatine Invitational.
The Columbus Wildcats took two of three duals at Van Buren County, beating the host VBC 45-19 and knocking off Mediapolis 49-27 but coming up just short against Burlington Notre Dame 42-31. The night was a strong one for Columbus senior Ethan Palmer, who was perfect with two pins and a 6-0 decision victory at 195 lbs. Senior Triston Miller and junior Ty Scorpil each won a major decision and got a pin at 152 and 120, respectively, while junior Cael Phillips won decisions by finals of 7-4 and 8-1 at 138. Other winners for the Wildcats were sophomore Jacob Nelson at 106; junior Ian Estudillo at 113; freshman Bowen Thomson at 126; senior Dante Zuniga at 145; junior Cole Storm at 170; sophomore Riley Kaalberg at 170; and sophomore Peyton White at 220; Columbus will take part in the Bean City Duals this weekend.
The Lone Tree Lions fell in both of their duals, losing 54-11 to Louisa-Muscatine and getting blanked 78-0 by Wapello. The only head-to-head win for the Lions came from sophomore Clemens Swaink, who earned a 29-14 technical knockout at 132.
