It’s an all-KCII area showdown in Wayland tonight when the WACO Warriors entertain the Hillcrest Academy Ravens in a Southeast Iowa Superconference boys and girls hoops doubleheader. The WACO boys come into the night unbeaten at 16-0 overall, 12-0 in Superconference play after a 59-11 win over Highland Tuesday. The Warriors are ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in this week’s poll from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. This season, WACO is scoring 70 points per game and giving up 35, shooting 49% from the floor, 36% from three and 59% at the line with 40 rebounds, 20 assists, 17 steals and 13 turnovers per game. Individually, the Warriors are led by Hunter Hughes at 17 points and four steals per game. Cody Graber has a team best eight boards per outing and Isaac Oswald four assists per game.
Hillcrest Academy is 9-8 this year following a loss at Pekin Tuesday 52-49. This season, the Ravens average 56 points per game and give up 47, shooting 45% from the floor, 33% from three and 51% at the line with 22 rebounds, 12 assists, 11 steals and 10 turnovers per game. Grant Bender leads Hillcrest with 17 points, five boards and three steals per game. Luke Schrock has a team best four assists per night. The Warriors won this matchup two weeks ago 65-46 with Hughes 20 points and 10 from Mason Miller, Seth Ours led Hillcrest with 17 and Bender had 11.
The WACO girls are 14-3 overall, 11-2 in the Superconference after beating Highland Tuesday 60-25. The Warriors score 54 points per game and give up 34, shooting 39% from the floor, 20% from long range and 58% at the line with 33 boards, 11 assists, 12 steals and 14 turnovers per night. Individually, Ellah Kissell is scoring 23 points per game to go with four steals and three assists to lead the way. Grace Coble has a team best five boards per night.
Hillcrest Academy is 0-17 overall, 0-11 in league play after a 56-21 loss to Pekin Tuesday. The Ravens average 24 points per game and give up 52, shooting 23% as a team overall, 22% from three and 48% at the line with 25 boards, four assists, seven steals and 24 turnovers per game. Individually, Claire Withrow has a team best 10 points per night. Delaney Shaw averages six boards per game and Malia Yoder three steals and two assists. The Warriors beat the Ravens earlier this month 66-36. Ellah Kissell had 30 points, Grace Coble 16 and Katie Leichty a 12 point 10 rebound double double for WACO while Claire Withrow had 22 points for Hillcrest.
