In the first ever event of it’s kind Friday, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union hosted State Qualifying Wrestling Super Regionals. All KCII area athletes were on the mat as part of action in Region 5 and Region 6 at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids. More than 50 teams participated at the site. Ten local athletes made their way to the podium and secured a trip to the state meet at Xtream Arena in Coralville next week.
Five Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will be at state, a school record number of qualifiers for a single state meet. The Golden Hawks put two in the finals, with Gabi Robertson at 100lbs and Ellie Brenneman at 135lbs both advancing as runners-up. Robertson was 2-1 on the day and Brenneman 3-1. Three Hawks finished in third place with Grace Conway securing a trip to state with a 10 second pin in the third place match to cap a 3-1 day, Mia Garvey with a third place match fall to finish a 4-1 meet and Ellie Callahan earned a spot with a 6-2 third-place decision and a 5-1 tournament. Mid-Prairie had the highest area team finish, placing fourth in the 25 team regional with 152 points, Bettendorf took the regional title with 217.5.
The WACO Warrriors punched a trio of tickets to state Friday. The Warrior had a pair make the finals with Rylee Rice at 110lbs and Bralyyn Wagler at 235lbs both advancing to state next week as runners-up with matching 2-1 records. Grace Fort is in at 190lbs after a fourth place finish and a 3-2 day. WACO was 14th in the team standings with 77 points.
The Washington Demons’ Teegan Sulentich will compete at state. She finished runner-up at 155lbs after a 2-1 day. The Demons were 20th in the team race with 27 points.
Highland’s Angelina Roling earned a bid to state at 115lbs with a third place finish and 4-1 tournament. The Huskies finished 15th in the team standings with 59 points.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats did not have any qualifiers but saw Yaleen Miranda, Dakota Storm and Miram Ruvalcaba each score one win apiece. The ‘Cats were 21st in the team standings with 12 points.
