The Hillcrest Academy Raven boys and girls basketball teams are on the road Tuesday to close January with a doubleheader against Wapello. The Raven boys are .500 on the season at 9-9 overall and 8-6 in the Superconference after a 51-40 loss Friday to unbeaten and top five ranked WACO in Wayland, led by 16 points from Grant Bender and 12 from Luke Schrock. Hillcrest scores 55 points per game and gives up 48, shooting 44% from the floor, 31% from downtown and 55% at the line with 24 boards, 14 assists, 11 steals and 12 turnovers per game. Individually, Bender has a team high 17 points and six boards per night. Schrock leads with three assists and steals per game.
Wapello is 5-12 overall and 5-8 in the Superconference, coming off of a 59-34 win Friday against Highland where Jackson Lanz and Carson Belzer each had 22 points. This season, the Indians score 44 points per game and give up 52, shooting 39% from the field, 24% from three and 55% at the line with 26 boards, eight assists, eight steals and 14 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Lanz at 19 points, nine boards and two steals per game. Casey Short averages two assists per night. The Ravens won the first round this season on Alumni Night in Kalona 59-46.
In the girls contest, Hillcrest is 0-18 overall and 0-15 in league play after falling to WACO in Wayland Friday 63-28 as Malia Yoder put up 16 points. This season, the Ravens average 24 points per game and give up 53, shooting 24% from the floor, 21% from long range and 49% at the line with 26 rebounds, five assists, seven steals and 25 turnovers per game. Individually, Claire Withrow is averaging 10 points per game, Delaney Shaw six rebounds and Malia Yoder three steals and two assists per night.
Wapello is 7-11 overall, 7-7 in conference after a 51-21 loss to Highland Friday where Madelyn Lanz and Jakayla Nelson each had six points. This year, the Arrows score 36 points per game and give up 47 while shooting 28% from the floor, 24% from three and 47% at the line with 28 rebounds, seven assists, 10 steals and 21 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include, Tatum Wolford with 17 points, Nelson with six rebounds, Veach with three steals and Jacie Hoeg with three assists. The Arrows won this matchup in Kalona in December 46-13.
