The Washington Demon boys’ basketball team notched a 71-64 win at Fort Madison Friday night, earning back-t0-back wins for just the third time this season. Washington head coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports his guys weathered a great performance from the opposition to secure the victory.
“I think Fort Madison played extremely well and shot the ball extremely well,” Stark says. “I don’t think offense was necessarily the issue. It was inside, where their post, I think he ended up with 33 or 35 points. And then, when we were crashing in on him, they were able to knock down some shots from the outside.. The thing that I thought I was most proud of was, when it’s not your best day, you still got to find ways to win, and down the stretch I thought our guys made the plays to end up with the victory.”
The Demons are now 6-3 in the Southeast Conference and 9-7 overall. The Washington girls were not as fortunate, falling 43-34 at home to Fort Madison. Despite allowing the Bloodhounds to hit four three pointers and take a 19-10 lead in the first quarter, the Demons were able to stay close throughout the game, including briefly taking a 32-31 lead in the third period. But Fort Madison’s suffocating defense did Washington in. Senior Alex Murphy led the Demons with 13 points, but Washington still drops their eighth of the last nine games and falls to 7-11. Both Demon teams are playing Saturday against Clear Creek-Amana and Monday versus Williamsburg.
