The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves earned a thrilling boys’ basketball victory, 53-52, over Burlington Notre Dame at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout on Saturday. WMU led 16-13 after one quarter and stayed in front by two at halftime. Notre Dame seized a one-point lead going into the final period, but the Wolves found a way to win a game that came down to the final seconds.
Junior forward Cam Buffington came through in a big spot for WMU, posting 15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Junior Abram Edwards added 12 points and seven rebounds, while senior Caleb Giese knocked down a pair of three-pointers and provided eight key points off the bench. The Wolves improve to 16-4 ahead of their regular-season finale tomorrow night against Lone Tree.
The weekend was not as good to the Winfield-Mount Union girls, who saw their unbeaten season come to an end with a 50-35 loss Friday against Mediapolis. A three-point deficit after a quarter of play doubled at the half, and while the ninth-ranked Wolves hung tough all night, they could never put a comeback together against the Bulldogs. WMU is now 19-1 ahead of the Class 1A postseason beginning. The Wolves have the top seed in 1A-Region 8 and will play their first regional game next Tuesday night.
