The playoff draws for area high school hoops teams have been released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association. Here is a look at the tournament trail for the Mid-Prairie and Hillcrest Academy boys and girls.
The Golden Hawk boys enter the second season as the fourth seed in Class 2A District 12 with an 11-10 overall record. They host conference rival, 5-13, West Liberty to open the playoffs on Monday night in Wellman, in a game that can be heard on KCII. The Hawks swept their two regular season meetings with the Comets. The winner between Mid-Prairie and West Liberty will travel to the top seed Wilton for a second round game with the Beavers, the Hawks dropped both contests with Wilton this year. Other teams in the district include 12-7 Pella Christian, 10-9 Pleasantville and 3-16 Cardinal.
The Mid-Prairie girls are the three seed in Class 3A Region 8 after a 15-6 regular season that saw them win 10 of 11 after Christmas. The Hawks open the tournament Saturday with a first round game at home against 11-10 Prairie City Monroe. You can hear that game live on KCII. The winner between the Mustangs and Hawks will travel north to Vinton-Shellsburg where they would draw the winner of 14-7 and No. 11 ranked Vinton-Shellsburg or 1-20 South Tama. Other teams in the regional include 8-12 Albia, 10-10 Centerville, 13-8 Chariton and 15-5 No. 8 Grinnell.
The Hillcrest Academy girls finished the regular season with an 0-19 record. They draw into Class 1A Region 3 and a first round game at the 17-3, South Iowa Cedar League Co-Champion Montezuma Bravettes Thursday night. You can hear that game live on KCII. Other teams in the regional include area schools 9-12 Highland, who meets 13-7 English Valleys on the road in their opener, 13-8 Lone Tree who hosts 9-12 Midland in their first round game, 16-4 Springville, 5-14 Easton Valley, 1-19 North Cedar, 14-7 Bellevue Marquette Catholic, 4-16 Prince of Peace, 17-5 Calamus Wheatland, 2-18 Belle Plaine, 14-6 Iowa Valley and 19-0 No. 3 North Linn.
The Hillcrest Academy boys wrapped up the regular year with an 11-10 mark. They are a part of Class 1A District 12 as the three seed with a first round assignment at Hillcrest Union Monday against 8-12 Iowa City Regina in a game that can be heard on KCII. Whoever advances between the Regals and Ravens would get the winner of 18-2 Lynnville-Sully and a team to be determined through a play-in game at Lynnville-Sully Thursday. Other teams in the district include area school Lone Tree with their 7-14 record, who travels to 11-9 Pekin to start the playoffs Thursday, along with 16-3 North Mahaska and 6-13 GMG.
