The final hoops polls of the season have been issued by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and despite two local teams suffering their first losses of the season last week, they remain featured among the best in the state.
The WACO boys check in at No. 5 in Class 1A this week, in the final top ten rankings of the year. The Warriors are 20-1 on the year after suffering a setback in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shoot Out last weekend 56-44 against fellow unbeaten at the time No. 5 in 2A West Burlington. WACO has since bounced back to end their regular season with a 55-43 victory over Pekin ahead of next week’s district tournament. The Warriors were unbeaten champions of the Superconference North Division.
The Winfield-Mt. Union girls are No. 8 in the final Class 1A rankings of the year. The Lady Wolves are 19-1 on the year and were also stung for their first loss in the Superconference Shoot Out, falling to No. 12 in 2A Mediapolis 50-35. WMU claimed the regular season North Division title in the Superconference with a 16-0 mark. They get the playoffs underway Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A regional tournament when they host 13-8 Holy Trinity Catholic.
