The 2022-23 deer seasons came to a close last month, and final totals show a seven percent increase over the 2021 harvest. In an official report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, 109,613 total deer were harvested statewide.
The increase is due in part to the new Excess Tag January Antlerless Season, which was approved by the Iowa Legislature last spring. With favorable weather in most of the state, the excess season saw more than 2,500 deer taken.
Washington County reported 1,862 total deer harvested in the most recent seasons, , 157 more than last season. This included 897 does, 61 doe fawn, and 713 antlered bucks.
