It’s the boys’ turn to take the floor for the first time in the Iowa high school basketball playoffs, and a number of matchups in southeast Iowa pit conference rivals against each other in district tournaments tonight.

That includes the Class 1A District 7 quarterfinals, where a pair of games will feature teams from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North. The conference-champion WACO Warriors put their top seed on the line when they host the eighth-seeded Columbus Wildcats. WACO is 20-1 and ranked fifth in the state in Class 1A thanks to stars like junior guard Hunter Hughes, who is averaging 16 points and three steals per game and shooting better than 41 percent on three-pointers. Columbus will try to build on Friday night’s play-in win over Highland that moved the Wildcats to 4-18, leaning on senior Grant Watson’s average of 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves will look to live up to their number-two seed in District 7 when they host Wapello. The dynamic duo of WMU junior forwards Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards is combining to average 30 points and 18 rebounds a game, powering the Wolves to five straight wins and a record of 17-4. Winfield-Mount Union will look for the sweep of the season series with seventh-seeded Wapello, which is 5-16.

The fourth-seeded Sigourney Savages open the postseason by welcoming Southeast Warren to town for the 1A District 9 quarterfinals. The Savages have reeled off four straight wins to reach 12-9 and have one of the area’s most versatile players in sophomore Issac Bruns, who is averaging almost 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists per contest. Sigourney’s opponent, Southeast Warren, is 11-10.

The Keota Eagles nabbed the two seed in 1A District 11 after a dominant regular season, going 19-3 thanks to juniors Sawyer Stout, Evan Vittetoe and Cole Kindred all averaging double-figure scoring. Keota takes on North Tama, who is 6-14. On the bottom half of that same substate bracket, the number-six-seed Lone Tree Lions are hoping that senior Drew Gauley continues to knock down three-pointers, as he’s shooting 36% from deep. Lone Tree will try to end a 10-game losing streak to conference rival Pekin in the District 12 quarterfinals.
