The Washington Demon girls’ basketball team had their season come to an end Saturday night with a 61-34 loss to Davenport-Assumption in the Class 3A Region 2 quarterfinals. Washington fell behind 22-3 in the first quarter and never recovered. Despite the loss, Demons head coach Shannon Rugg told KCII Sports the final score doesn’t indicate the fight that his team brings.
“We’re going to go out there, we’re going to play as hard as we possibly can, and we’re going to have as much fun as we possibly can,” Rugg said. “If you give 100 percent, then either [Assumption] is better than us, or I did something wrong as a coach, and this team was better than us. But we gave everything we got and just got beat by a better team.”
Senior Alex Murphy led the Demons with 11 points scored in her final game. Along with Murphy, Washington will graduate Kaylin Long, Makenna Conrad and Iris Peterson from their roster after going 7-14.
