The Pennies for Patients event at Sigourney Schools came to a close last week, ending what was one of the more successful fundraisers in the event’s history. A grand total of $930.20 was raised for the comfort and welfare of veteran patients at the VA Central Iowa Healthcare System.
In an effort organized by the Sigourney National Honor Society, students, staff, and community members spent the last several weeks dropping pennies, and other loose change into buckets set up in the school. Each one had the picture of a teacher or coach who volunteered to be a part of the event.
At the conclusion of the event, wrestling coach, Cory Van Den Heuvel’s bucket received the most donations, totaling $411.27. Principal Shannon Webb’s bucket led the academic staff with $77.16. Webb was able to avoid the pie in the face, designated for the winners, with a last-minute donation. The honor then went to social studies teacher, Dillon Maass.
Sigourney senior and NHS President, Macy Fisch tells KCII what it means to be able to hold such an event, and thanked all those who supported it. “It feels great. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and it’s just amazing that we get to give that much money back. The whole community just came together and put a lot of money into the event.”
Sigourney Schools celebrated their collective achievement, as well as the pies in the face, at a Pep Rally Assembly last Friday.
