The Sigourney Savages started strong, but they could not finish off a playoff victory and lost 68-47 at North Mahaska Tuesday night in the Class 1A Region 8 girls’ basketball quarterfinals. Sigourney had the lead, 22-18, after a high-scoring first quarter. But being on the wrong end of a 15-0 run going into halftime put the Savages down 11 at the break, and North Mahaska pulled away from there.

Sigourney junior Carly Goodwin led the scoring with 15 points. Sophomore Ava Fish scored nine points, while classmate Josephine Moore added nine points, nine rebounds and two steals for the seventh-seeded Savages, but it was not enough to keep the season from ending with a record of 16-8. Sigourney will graduate two seniors from this year’s roster, Rain Barthelman and Zoe Webb.
