After winter weather postponed the action last night, area boys’ basketball teams will look to earn their place in district championship games as the postseason continues tonight. In the Class 1A District 7 semifinals, the top-seeded WACO Warriors face an old rival in number-four seed New London. WACO is 21-1 and ranked fifth in the state in 1A. The Warriors lean on junior guard Hunter Hughes, who averages nearly 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals per game. But WACO also plays elite defense, allowing just 35 points a game. The Warriors will try to earn their second win of the season against New London after defeating the 16-6 Tigers 68-64 on January 9th.
The second-seeded Keota Eagles are seeking a spot in the 1A District 11 final when they host Belle Plaine tonight in the semis. The Eagles are 20-3 and have won 10 in a row thanks to the scoring of junior guard Sawyer Stout, who is putting up better than 18 points per game. Keota will try to sweep the series with Belle Plaine, having already defeated the 14-9 Plainsmen twice this season.
The fourth-seeded Sigourney Savages will have one of the toughest matchups of the night when they visit top seed Baxter in the District 9 semifinals. Sophomore Issac Bruns has been an all-around force, averaging almost 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists to help the Savages win five straight and improve to 13-9. But Sigourney’s opponent is ranked eighth in the state, and the Baxter Bolts have only lost once in 20 games this season.
