Local athletes again competed Thursday at the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with a pair of area wrestlers remaining on the championship side of their brackets.

Highland’s Carlos Valenzuela is into Friday’s 132lb semifinals after a Thursday victory over Dylan Stein of Lenox by fall.

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Russell Coil continued his state winning streak at 285lbs, moving into the semis with a 9-2 win over Trent Cakerice of Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center.

Area athletes still alive in wrestlebacks include, Washington’s Aaron Boone, Kai Malone for Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback and Jack Clarahan and for the WACO Warriors Gage Samo and Louden Huisenga.

Those who saw their time in Des Moines draw to a close Thursday included Washington’s Caden Greiner, Chase Greiner and Curtis Stender, Mid-Prairie’s Terry Bordenave, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Dante Zuniga, Triston Miller and Cole Storm, Highland’s Jack Peiffer, Sigourney-Keota’s Brady Clark, Dan McLaughlin, Reid Molyneux and Jake Moore and WACO’s Drew Diers.

Action continues Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
