KCII News spoke with Senator Grassley about the Expanding Agricultural Exports Act that is in committee. It is a bill to amend the Agricultural Trade Act of 1978 to extend and expand the Market Access Program and the Foreign Market Development Cooperator Program. Grassley discussed the proposed legislation, “First of all the fact is, that the American farmer or all of agriculture produces about a third more than what is domestically consumed. So the export of this excess agricultural product is very very important for for making sure that the farmer can market it and profit from it. So this bill would give more money to the foreign agricultural marketing service, which is in the department of agriculture. To produce and market more of our excess agricultural products overseas.” Another important piece of legislation for Iowa farmers is the Free Trade Agreement. Senator Grassley was part of the newly enacted United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) through Congress as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
