Championship Saturday’s grand march and awards presentation had a local flavor at the Iowa High School Athletic Association State wrestling tournament as seven area athletes return to southeast Iowa with hardware.
In Class 1A, the top finish from the KCII listening area went to Jack Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota placing third at 170lbs. He went 5-1 during his time at the state capital including scoring a fall and two wins by major decision, one of those in the third place match to beat Jacob Thiry of Don Bosco 14-4. His teammate Reanah Utterback joined him on the podium, taking eighth at 106lbs. In doing so, she became only the second girl to medal in the history of the IAHSAA traditional tournament. She ended her time in Des Moines with a 2-3 record.
The Highland Huskies put a pair on the podium Saturday. Carlos Valenzuela at 132lbs finished in sixth place. He finished 2-2 at the tournament including one pin. At 120lbs for the Huskies, Luke Guseman was eighth. He was 4-3 during his state run including two bonus point wins with a fall and a tech fall.
The WACO Warriors have hardware coming home this week. At 113lbs, Gage Samo finished in sixth. He went 3-3 at the event.
In Class 2A, at 120lbs, Washington’s Aaron Boone represented the Demons in sixth place. He put together a 5-3 tournament with four bonus point wins including a pair of falls and tech falls.
Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Russel Coil climbed to sixth on the podium at 285lbs. He went 3-3 during his stay in Des Moines.
