The Wastewater Treatment Plant in Winfield is currently in non-compliance with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The city plans to fix this with a complete overhaul of the facility.
Located on the southeast side of town, the current plant was originally constructed in 1987. With equipment that is continually failing, the city hopes to renovate a majority of the facility.
While the goal is for the project to begin by late 2023 or early 2024, it will not be cheap. It is estimated that the work will cost the city approximately $4.5 million. Winfield has already received $500,000 of funding from the Wastewater and Drinking Water Treatment Financial Assistance Program. The city also plans to apply for funding through the State Revolving Fund.
Any Winfield residents or taxpayers are invited to voice any concerns or questions involving the project at their city council meetings over the next three months. Their next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8 at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
