For the first time in 25 years, the Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball team is headed to state. Eighth-ranked WMU defeated number thirteen North Mahaska 52-47 last night in the Class 1A Region 8 final, securing their place in this year’s state tournament. The Wolves got off to a strong start by taking an 11-3 lead, but when senior Melina Oepping had to exit the game because of foul trouble, North Mahaska turned the tables, pulling within two points at the end of the first quarter and holding Winfield-Mount Union to only two points scored in the second period.
WMU trailed 22-17 at halftime, but Oepping’s return would lead to a turnaround in the second half. Oepping scored 10 points in the third quarter alone and ended up pouring 16 of her game-high 24 points after the half. The Wolves led 39-37 heading into the final period and would be up by as much as eight in the final minute on their way to the win. Winfield-Mount Union head coach Mendy McCreight told KCII Sports that no team deserves it more.
“It’s so rewarding,” McCreight said, “and I’m just so proud that they worked really hard and they got to where they needed, because they deserve this. The dedication, the hard work it takes, practice after practice, drill after drill, they never give up, they’re always giving 110 percent, and I’m just glad I can reward them by taking them to the state tournament.”
Senior guard Keetyn Townsley added a pair of three-pointers and 12 points as the Wolves raise their record to 22-1. WMU will now play in the Class 1A state quarterfinals against North Linn Wednesday evening.
