Louisa County Conservation is hosting the first of three Building Better Birder Workshops this year on Saturday, March 4. The event is free and open to all ages and experience levels.

Saturday’s workshop will be conducted by Kelly McKay with the BioEco Research and Monitoring Center. Beginning at 8 a.m., the day includes two field trips to Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge and Cone Marsh Wildlife Management. The workshop concludes at 5 p.m. Participants can sign up for select sessions, or the entire day.

Naturalist for Louisa County Conservation, Lana Artz-McComb, tells KCII what guests can expect during the workshop. “These are all about building your birding skills. Whether you’re starting from the complete beginning, or whether you are more experienced, it’ll be talking about different habitats, what birds you can see in the habitat, where you might want to go to see different types of birds. Each program has its own theme to it, so the March 4 program is specifically about waterfowl and their migration patterns.”

The additional workshops will be held on May 8 and September 9 of this year. Registration for the events is required and can be completed at louisacountyconservation.org or by calling 319-523-8381. For a full itinerary of the workshops, click here.
