It was a banner year for girls’ basketball in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, with many of the area’s best players near the top of the state in statistical categories. WACO Warriors senior Ellah Kissell is the fourth-highest scoring player in the state in Class 1A, piling up 510 points. Kissell’s 194 made field goals is also fourth in 1A, while she hoisted up the second-most shot attempts in the state at 510, as part of a season where she averaged more than 22 points per game and shot better than 38 percent.
Highland senior Katelyn Waters dished out 132 assists, the fourth-most in 1A. The Huskies’ Sarah Burton’s 207 defensive rebounds is tied for fourth, while the junior is 11th in total rebounds and 12th in blocked shots. Winfield-Mount Union senior Bradie Buffington is not far behind at 16th in blocks, but no player seems to have done a single thing on the basketball court better than senior Keetyn Townsley. The Wolves’ guard has hit a state-best 52.6% of her three-point attempts, knocking down 30 out of 57 shots from beyond the arc. Townsley will look to hit a few more key shots for WMU when the Wolves take on North Linn in the Class 1A state quarterfinals tomorrow night. You can hear Winfield-Mount Union play in the state tournament tomorrow evening starting at 6:15 on KCII.
