The Columbus Wildcats had a bit of a breakthrough in girls’ basketball this season, as their seven wins was the most for the program since 2017. In recognition, the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North has bestowed all-conference honors on four Wildcats.
Senior Sara Vela joins the ranks of some of the state’s best players on the first team. Vela averaged just under eight points, four rebounds and three steals per game. Sophomore guard Ariana Vergara was Columbus’ leading scorer and averaged a little better than eight points, four rebounds and two steals a game on her way to a second-team selection.
Another Wildcat senior receives an honorable mention in Victoria Howell, who posted almost five points, three boards and two steals per contest in her final season. Sophomore forward Aracely Garza is also an honorable mention after she led the team in rebounding and was eighth in the Super Conference North in total rebounds.
