grizzlies-fundraiser

Adaptive Sports Iowa is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide sports and recreation opportunities for Iowans with physical disabilities. The Iowa Grizzlies is their youth basketball team. On Saturday, the two groups raised $6,000 during their wheelchair basketball fundraiser at the Wellman Parkside YMCA.

Participants of all ages enjoyed an afternoon of competition, camaraderie, and smiles through the 3-on-3 tournament. The winning team even had a chance to take on the Grizzlies varsity team, with the Grizzlies pulling away to a convincing 35-22 victory. Raffles and a silent auction added to the fun.

Event organizer, Dixie Conrad, was pleased with the funds received, but even more impressed with the palpable sense of community at the event. “There’s no way you can describe what kind of fellowship and togetherness and the family that we have. We support each other. We’re there for the kids.” Conrad went on to thank the sponsors, the Wellman YMCA, and everyone else who played a role in the event’s success.

Adaptive Sports Iowa was founded in 2011 as an extension of the Iowa Sports Foundation. They offer 12 different programs, including wheelchair basketball, track and field, and sled hockey. For more information, to donate, or to get involved in any of their activities, visit adaptivesportsiowa.org.
