Two of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s best boys’ basketball players have been piling up the postseason honors, and now a pair of juniors receive another. Cam Buffington of Winfield-Mount Union and Hunter Hughes of WACO have both been named to the All-Substate 4 team in Class 1A by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association.

In helping WMU win 19 games, Buffington was the leading rebounder and second-leading scorer in the Super Conference North, averaging over 19-and-a-half points and nine-and-a-half rebounds per game. No one in the conference made more shots than Buffington, and shooting over 58 percent on all field goals was third-best in the league. Buffington was at his best in the postseason substate tournament, where he posted better than 24.5 points and 11 boards a game in guiding the Wolves to a district final for a second straight season.

Hughes was an integral part of WACO’s 21-win campaign that saw the Warriors ranked most of the season. Hughes was near the top of the state in steals and finished fifth in the Super Conference North in assists. In addition to averaging over 15.5 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals per contest, Hughes was an elite shooter, knocking down over 52% of his total attempts and shooting over 42% on three-pointers.
