KCII News spoke with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley this week. He discussed the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act. Grassley describes what the act is, “We have a law that goes back to the 1970’s, I think. Or the 1960s it says that if you’ve got a local locker plant in Iowa, and you’re slaughtering for local people mostly for their own personal use. But if you’re big enough and you’ve got some leftover and you want to market it, you got to market it just in that state, you can’t send it across state lines. So this would allow certain pre-approved, local lockers that get federal certification. Then they’ll be able to sell easier across state lines.” This amendment was introduced to the Senate on February 16th.
