The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys golf team made a statement Monday with their season opening River Valley dual win over the visiting Iowa City Regina Regals in Kalona. After a year that saw them finish 14th in the RVC and seventh at sectionals, they are ready to make some noise in 2023. The Hawks pounded Regina 167-214. That team score in their first event of the year, is already lower than any they posted a season ago. Meet medalist honors went to Golden Hawk freshman Bryce Henry with his two-over-par 38. Senior Warren Scarff, a district qualifier a year ago, was medalist runner-up with a 39. Those two joined KCII sports after the meet to talk about their nights as individuals and as a team. Henry said, “Putting was working for me tonight. I didn’t have a single three-putt, and had a lot of par saves. It’s great seeing the team do well.”
Scarff added, “Hole two was key for me tonight. After I chunked a tee shot I was able to get on the green. Overall tonight, everything kind of clicked together for me. It was very nice to see the team play this well. I have helped my teammates. We talk to each other, we help each other out at practice, and it’s awesome to see it work out here!”
Other scores for the Hawks included Drew Schlabaugh and Clayton Davidson with matching 45s, Alex Bean at 49 and Aiden Bush 54. Mid-Prairie is back in action tonight when they travel to Washington for a triangular against the Demons and Columbus Wildcats.
