Opening night was a big one for the Washington boys and girls golf teams Tuesday as they entertained the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and Columbus Wildcats in a non-conference triangular at the Washington Golf and Country Club. The Demon boys posted a championship 158 score, beating Mid-Prairie’s 176 and the Wildcat’s 233. Freshman Drew Conrad went low with a meet medalist round of 36, tied with teammate Roman Roth who finished as medalist runner-up after a cardback. Other scores for Washington included Luke Beenblossom 41, Isaac Vetter and Rajan Roth with matching 45s and Teague Mayer at 47. The Demon girls winning magic number was 183, led by meet medalist, Makenna Conrad’s 41. After the meet, Conrad brother and sister, Drew and Makenna talked about the keys to their medal rounds, winning together and their team success. Makenna Conrad said, “I had a good hole on seven with my best tee shot and a nice par. I didn’t know how he was going to do for his first meet. He handled the pressure pretty well. It’s pretty cool that we both got first place! I’m very proud of how my teammates played. Most of us were in the 40s.”
Drew Conrad added, “I made a few eight footers today to save par. We’ve never both been medalist before but it’s pretty cool. She thought she’d beat me. The boys had two 36s, then a 41 and we played pretty well as a team.”
Other scores for the Demon girls included Kaylin Long and Haley Mitchell at 46, Maci Williams 50, Mallary Johnson 52 and Alecia Goff 56.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks were team runners-up in both the boys and girls competition. The Golden Hawk boys fired a 176 with a low round 39 from Drew Schlabaugh.
