Both Washington Demon soccer teams are still undefeated after knocking off Mount Pleasant yesterday. The Washington girls needed both overtime periods and penalty kicks, but they ultimately outlasted the Panthers. After falling behind in the 12th minute, the Demons leveled the score 10 minutes later on a goal from freshman Angeline Anderson. Mount Pleasant would go back in front late in the first half and would still be up until the 70th minute, when sophomore Ruby Witthoft put a loose ball in the back of the net.

The game would stay tied at two all the way into penalties, where junior Audrey Anderson and seniors Nicoll Torrijos and Lindsay Diaz buried their attempts. Freshman goalkeeper Aleigha Medley ultimately provided the winning margin by stopping three Mount Pleasant penalty shots, and she had quite the description of the moment.

“Life-changing,” Medley said. “[It was] scary, but I feel really relieved. We’re just a great team, we’ve got great chemistry and everyone was believing in each other. No one doubted each other.”

The win means, after not starting 4-0 at any point in program history, Washington has done so in each of the last two seasons. Their first ever 5-0 start can come with a victory Monday at Fort Madison.

The Demon boys got a virtuoso performance from Manny Raymundo in their 5-0 defeat of Mount Pleasant. After assisting Fredy Aguilar’s goal in the opening minute, the junior picked up a hat trick and added one more assist to account for all the Washington scoring. The 3-0 Demon boys will take on defending Southeast Conference champion Fort Madison in their next game Monday.
