Last week, the Iowa Unit of Mennonite Disaster Services joined with hundreds of volunteers to aid in the cleanup following the March 31 storms. After helping at over 15 properties along the storm’s path, MDS is requesting volunteers for their final round of cleanup on Wednesday.

Tomorrow’s cleanup will be near Elm Avenue in Wellman and the surrounding fields. Volunteers who sign up to help will be walking fields, cutting up debris, and clearing debris around buildings. They will meet at 8 a.m. at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Work boots or old tennis shoes and work gloves are recommended and meals will be provided.

Thanks to the help of volunteers in the southeast Iowa communities, a majority of the cleanup has been completed. As the MDS investigates more potential sites, Project Coordinator, Marty Roth, was grateful for the support, and encouraged those who were unable to volunteer last week to stay vigilant. “All the people that call and volunteer, all that is very appreciated. If we didn’t use you, watch for the opportunity again. It’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and feel good about what you’re doing in your community.”
