For over four decades, the Winfield food pantry has been operating out of the Winfield Methodist Church. Due to recent growth, the volunteer-based organization is working on raising funds as they plan to relocate.
The goal is to move into the building at 107 East Elm Street, which housed the Winfield Beacon newspaper for over a century. Before that can happen, significant renovations must be made. Cathy Lauderdale, who works closely with the food pantry, tells KCII, “We need a new roof. We need a mini-kitchen in there. We’ve started on a bathroom which was clear in the back of the building before, and we’ve moved it forward. We’ve gone just so far because I’ve been writing grants. We rely totally on grants and donations.” Depending on funds received, she hopes to have the move completed some time this summer.
Winfield community members can help the cause at an upcoming fundraiser on Saturday, April 15. Volunteers will be providing a meal including hot chicken sandwiches, maid rites, salads, and drinks for a free-will donation. Guests can dine-in or carry out from the Winfield Veterans Building from 5-7 p.m.
