Some of the best on the oval in southeast Iowa were on display Monday in Lone Tree at the Mike Kautz Invitational. Seven schools from the KCII listening area were in attendance. In the girls team race, Mid-Prairie was the winner with 152 points over second place Lone Tree’s 135. The Hawks had six event championships including Phoebe Shetler going double gold with a 1500 time of 5:33.91 and a 3000 of 12:00.12. Harper Pacha was the shot put champ with a throw of 33’7″. Three Mid-Prairie relays won gold including the 4×200 team of Nevaeh Decker, Sophia Schwartz, Lanee Duwa and Elise Gingerich in 1:55.73, the distance medley of Duwa, Gingerich, Hannah Rodgers and Kali Miller in 4:51.72, and the shuttle hurdle team of Sophie Miller, Ashlee Farrier, and Emily and Olivia Schlabach in 1:13.87. Other top performances included seconds in the 100 for Decker, Sophie Miller in the 100 hurdles, the 4×400, 4×800 and sprint medley teams, and thirds for Annika Poll in the 400, Emily Schlabach in the 100 hurdles, Ashley Harmsen in the shot put, Pacha in the discus and the 4×100 team.
The Lady Lions won five events on their home track. Ava Christofferson won the 100 in 13 seconds and the 200 in 27.33 seconds. Rylee Shield was the 400 winner in 1:03.75 and Riley Krueger won high jump clearing five feet. The Lions 4×100 team of Vivian Zaruba, Christofferson, Krueger and Shield were winners in 53.10 seconds and the sprint medley team of Avery Morarie, Zaruba, Christofferson and Shield posted a winning time of 1:57.98. Shield was second in the 200, Zaruba was second in the 400 and 800 and Alex Dautremont was runner-up in disc. Morarie placed third in the long jump with the Lady Lions 4×4, 4×8 and shuttle hurdle teams take third.
The Highland girls were third with 81 points. Sarah Burton had the lone event title for the Huskies, winning the long jump flying 17’0.5″. Other top Highland finishes included runner-up for Siena Stannerson in the 3000 and Hailey Netser in the high jump. Second for the 4×100, 4×200 and shuttle hurdle teams. Third for Mackenzie McFarland in the 100 and Stanerson in the 1500.
WACO was fifth with 59 points. Zoey Dennler won gold for the Warriors in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:15.12. Other top WACO finishers included runner-up for Elyssa Graber in the 1500, third for McKenzie Vradenberg in the 200 and for the 4×200 team.
Columbus was sixth with 47 points. Lily Coil was event champion, winning the 100m hurdles in 17.50 seconds. She was also second in the 400m hurdles. The Wildcat distance medley was second, Ariana Vergara was third in the 800 as was Naveiah Garza in the high jump.
Hillcrest Academy was seventh with 17 points. Delaney Shaw had the best performance, finishing runner-up in the long jump.
Keota scored 11 points with their top finish third in the sprint medley relay with Grace Conger, Izzi Chalupa, Cassandra Swantz and Olivia Lyle.
Columbus dominated the boys side of the event with 177.50 points, topping Louisa-Muscatine’s 115 points. The Wildcats scored an impressive 11 event titles on the night. Jeff Hoback won the 100 in 10.77, Kaden Amigon the 200 in 22.39, Damian Vergara the 800 in 2:11.36, Cael Phillips the mile in 5:14.37, Alexander Rees the 400m hurdles in 1:00.54 and Triston Miller the high jump going 6’6.5″. In relays, the 4×200 team of Hoback, Riley Kaalberg, Miller and Amigon were best in 1:32.29, the 4×400 team of Juan Chairez, Tim Hills-Carrier, Cole Storm and Vergara were winners in 3:48.46, the 4×800 team of Phillips, Hills-Carrier, Storm and Vergara won in 9:00.69, the sprint medley team of Miller, Kaalberg, Hoback and Amigon beat the field in 1:36.21 as did the shuttle hurdle team of Dante Zuniga, Rees, Jon Miranda and Miller in 1:03.50. Other top finishes included second for Kaalberg in the 100, Hills-Carrier in the 800, Freddy Escobar in the two-mile, Rees in the 110 hurdles and Zuniga in the 400 hurdles. Third places included Tyler Humiston in the 800, Zuniga in the 110 hurdles, Russell Coil in the shot put and the distance medley team.
WACO was third with 91.50 points and scored one event title in the night with Simeon Reichenbach winning the 110 hurdles in 15.62 seconds. Other top Warrior finishes included second for Isaac Oswald in the 200, Mason Miller in the high jump and the 4×100, and third each for Reichenbach in the 100, Mattias Luitjens in the two-mile, Louden Huisenga in the 400 hurdles, Odee Shtefanchuk in the discus and the shuttle hurdle team.
Lone Tree was fourth with 89 points. The Lions won a pair of events with the 4×100 team of Maddox Jondle, Braxdyn McAtee, Mayson Hemsted and Jader Sanchez finishing in 48.26 seconds and the distance medley team of Brody Magruder, Hemsted, Jondle and William Rockafellow posting 4:15.29. Other top Lion performances included second for the 4×200, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle teams, third for Drew Gauley in the 200, Joey Birtcher in the mile, and Sanchez in the long jump.
Keota was fifth with 26 points. Top Eagle finish was the sprint medley team of Chase Sieren, Evan Vittetoe Gavin Sieren and Luke Moeller placing third.
Hillcrest Academy was sixth with 25 points as Owen Scott went second in the long jump and third in the 400 and high jump.
Mid-Prairie scored 20 points and got a pair of runner-up finishes from Burke Berry in the shot put and discus.
Highland had eight points with fifth place finishes for Jackson Schneider in the 110 and 400 hurdles, the 4×100 and distance medley.
