Some new faces got to show what they can do for the Washington Demon boys’ track and field team Tuesday at the Indian Relays in Wapello, and they seized the moment by finishing second in the team scoring. Washington picked up three total victories, including junior Alec Ulin winning the 400-meter dash in 51.58 seconds. Sophomore Mason Morgan needed only 16.29 seconds to claim the title in the 110-meter hurdles, while the Demons’ shuttle hurdles team was also victorious in a time of one minute six seconds.

One of the veterans who did make an impact for Washington was senior Brayden Hartman, who was second in both the discus toss and shot put. Sophomore Dirk Rothe ended up third in the 800 meters, followed one spot later by freshman teammate Sawyer Tschantz. The Demons took second in the four-by-200-meter relay and were third in both the 4-by-800 and 1,600-meter medley. Next up for the Washington boys is the Denny White Relays later today in Mount Pleasant.

The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves finished fifth as a team at Wapello, led by two winners. Junior Gabriel Hemsworth was the champion of the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.44 seconds, while classmate Cam Buffington won the long jump with a top leap of 21 feet three inches. WMU also won the 1,600 medley, while the Wolves were second in the 4-by-100 and fourth in the 4-by-800. Sophomore Kohlby Newsom finished third in the 1,600 and junior Cole Milks took fourth in the long jump to round out the day for Winfield-Mount Union, which also heads to Mount Pleasant this afternoon and evening.
