The future site of the Winfield Historical Museum

Plans are in motion to move the Winfield Historical Museum from its current site, to a larger building downtown. With major renovations required at the new site, a fundraiser centered around Winfield basketball will be held at the veterans building on Sunday, April 16.

Those who attend will hear from three guest speakers, including Ken Rew, son of Coach Orrie Rew, who led the Wolves to a state championship during the 1949/50 season. He will share memorabilia and pictures from that time, and excerpts from the game’s radio broadcast will be played. Judy Rawson, President and Founder of the Winfield Historical Society, tells KCII, “People that have either been to those games, or love the history of basketball, they will really enjoy seeing what we are going to present that day.”

Klay Edwards, current head coach for the boys, will share his experiences as a player for the Wolves on a team that made three consecutive state tournaments. Head coach for Mt. Pleasant, Eric Rawson, also a former player, will be on hand to speak about WMU’s state championship run in 1995. The program will end with a discussion on the game of basketball and how it has evolved over the years.

The event begins at 2 p.m. with free-will donations going towards the renovation project of the new museum.
