It was a road win over Wapello Thursday at Carl McGill Field for the Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls soccer team by a 7-2 score. The Arrows ambushed the Wildcats with a goal in the 13th minute, from there, Columbus scored the next seven. Lecet Quiroz pounded home the equalizer in the 16th minute, Abby Acosta gave the Wildcats the lead with a 23rd minute goal and Karyela Silerio beat the keeper twice before half in the 36th and 38th minutes to give Columbus a 4-1 lead going to the break. Out of the locker room, Quiroz completed her hat trick with 43rd and 53rd minute goals. Silerio followed suit in the 59th minute. Wapello would add a final goal in the last five minutes of the match. After the contest, Quiroz and Silerio joined KCII sports to talk about the individual performance and the team’s win. Quiroz said, “When the team is all up together, working together, having those 1-2s, we really get those opportunities. (My favorite goal) was probably the kick right at the top of the 18. I know we’ve been on a losing streak for a little bit but we really wanted to take this chance and work together to work harder than we have before. We all trusted each other.”

Salerio added, “Looking up and seeing everybody open, the team coming in as one and talking a lot, you have a really clear view. Favorite goal was the first goal and the excitement after it. Feels super nice after losing a couple of games and coming back, gaining all of that confidence and proving to not only our coaches but ourselves that we can do it no matter what.”

The ‘Cats outshot the Arrows 22-5 and held nearly 70% possession. To go along with the scoring Quiroz and Maribel Montiel each had two assists while Acosta and Yaileen Miranda added one each. Alynna Leos made a pair of saves in goal. The Wildcats are now 2-4 this year, they travel to Mediapolis Friday.
