As part of a National opioid-related class-action lawsuit against retailers like Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens, the state of Iowa is expected to receive up to $360 million. For cities and counties to be eligible for some of these funds, they have until tomorrow to sign on.

That’s exactly what the city of Fairfield did last week. City Council members authorized Mayor, Connie Boyer, to sign documents that allow Fairfield to participate in the settlement. Johnson County and Iowa City’s governments opted in as well.

The Iowa Attorney General’s office signed on to five new settlement agreements with opioid manufacturers and pharmacies in 2022. The lawsuit claims that opioid medications were distributed and marketed without fully informing users of the risks. In 2021, prescription opioids led to over 16,000 overdose deaths in the United States, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
