Area track & field teams gathered at Winfield-Mount Union High school for the annual Pankoke Relays Thursday, and there were plenty of top-tier performances. The Lone Tree Lions finished third in the girls’ team scoring, led by three relay victories. Lone Tree was first in the four-by-100-meters with a time of 52.19 seconds while also claiming victory in the 4-by-200 in one minute 51 seconds and the sprint medley in 1:59.
Vivian Zaruba was the Lions’ lone individual winner, taking the title in the 800 meters in 2:46. Freshman Ava Christofferson and sophomore Rylee Shield were runners-up in the 100 and 200, respectively, while senior Riley Krueger was third in both the high jump and the 100-meter hurdles.
Sophomores Avery Morarie and Cate Sexton were second and third, respectively, in the long jump, while freshmen Alyson Ford and Sophie Bell had fourth-place finishes in the high jump and the 400, respectively. Lone Tree was also second in the shuttle hurdles relay and third in the 4-by-800.
The Highland girls were fourth in the team standings, led by three winners. Senior Jessica Kraus was the discus throw champion with a top toss of 88 feet six-and-a-half inches. Freshman Siena Stanerson won the 1,500 meters in 6:13 and was second in the 3,000, while junior Sarah Burton followed up a third-place finish in the 100 with a leap of nearly 16-and-a-half feet that was good enough to win. Along with senior Adelynn Kleopfer finishing fourth in the 100 hurdles, the Huskies were third in the 4-by-100, 4-by-200 and the shuttle hurdles.
Winfield-Mount Union was fifth in the girls’ standings on their home track, with Wolves senior Keetyn Townsley picking up another victory in the 100 hurdles in a hair under 17 seconds. Townsley was also part of the shuttle hurdles team that won for WMU in 1:18. Freshman Quin Smith was second in the high jump and fourth in the 200, while senior Bradie Buffington was a runner-up in the shot put. Winfield-Mount Union also had finishes of second in the 4-by-200; third in the sprint medley; and fourth in the 4-by-100.
WACO’s best finish came from junior Zoey Dennler, who was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles. Sophomores Elyssa Graber and Justine Lynn were third in the 800 and 1,500, respectively, while the Warriors also finished fourth in both the distance medley and the shuttle hurdles to build on their victory in 5:01 in the distance medley.
