There were plenty of outstanding performances from area boys’ track & field athletes at this year’s Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mount Union. The host Wolves in particular put together a strong effort. In the midst of qualifying for the Drake Relays, WMU junior Gabriel Hemsworth was a winner in both the 400-meter run in 53.4 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 56.64 seconds. Junior Cam Buffington was also a victor in the event he qualified for, posting a top leap of 20 feet 10 inches in the long jump.
Senior Jeff Maish was a runner-up for the Wolves in the 3,200, while senior Kai Malone was third in the discus toss and fourth in the shot put. Other third-place finishes for WMU came from sophomore Sheaden Adams in the 400 meters; freshman Alex Venzor in the 800; and sophomore Kohlby Newsom in the 1,600. Junior Abram Edwards was third in the high jump and fourth in the 100, while classmate Ty Scorpil also finished fourth in the 400 hurdles.
The WACO Warriors were on their A-game Thursday, led by senior Simeon Reichenbach winning the 110 hurdles in 15.42 seconds and taking second in the long jump. Classmate Drew Diers was also a winner, claiming the shot put title by hitting 40-and-a-half feet.
Fellow senior Odee Shtefanchuk was the discus champion with a top toss of 196 feet five inches, with junior teammate Chase Waterhouse the runner-up. Warriors senior Mason Miller took second in both the 110 hurdles and the high jump, while WACO senior Mattias Luitjens was third in the 3,200 and sophomore Clayton Miller was fourth in the long jump.
The best finish for the Lone Tree Lions came from senior Tyce Ault, earning the bronze medal in the 110 hurdles. Freshmen Gabe Forbes and Grey Spillman were fourth in the 400 and the high jump, respectively. While Lone Tree will be back in action Monday at Belle Plaine, WACO and Winfield-Mount Union will join other area teams like Highland, Columbus and Keota Tuesday in Sigourney for this year’s Savage Relays.
