On Wednesday, April 12th, the Washington Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Washington Class got on a school bus and traveled the countryside and townships as part of County History Day. The day was led by retired teacher and local historian Mike Zahs and Committee Member Kara Booth, Washington State Bank’s Marketing Director. The class began the day learning about the history of the Washington County Fairgrounds before traveling to Ainsworth to visit the Opera House and cemetery. The bus then traveled to the southern portion of the county, perusing through Crawfordsville before heading to the Kalona area. The class visited the local Country Store, had lunch on an Amish farm, and made a stop at Golden Delight Bakery. The afternoon included a hike up to an ancient Indian burial ground and a visit to Salem Church of God, which first held service in 1877.
