As we hit the month of May, the regular season for area track teams begins to draw to a close. The Highland Huskies host one of the final meets of the year tonight. The Huskies were last on the track Thursday at the Eckstrand Relays at WACO. The Highland girls were third in their division as a team with five event championships. Sarah Burton won the long jump and 100, Siena Stanerson took the 1500, Jenna Kraus the discus and the 4×200 team of Lilly Barre, Lorelei Lueck, Burton and McKenzie McFarland was a winner. For the Highland boys in Wayland, they scored six points with Elvin Hernandez fourth in long jump and Jackson Schneider fifth in the 100 hurdles.
The Mid-Prairie boys and girls will finish the regular year tonight in Riverside. The Hawks had a big weekend at the Drake Relays where the boys were led by a championship for Jayden Stafford in the 400 wheelchair race and a third place finish for Cain Brown in the high jump to go with 16th in the long jump. Mid-Prairie’s last team event was Tuesday at Anamosa where they placed fifth of 10 schools, with championships for Stafford in the 100, 200 and 400 wheelchair events and Jayse Yoder winning the 800 and two mile. The Golden Hawk girls saw success at Drake with Danielle Hostetler finishing third in the 1500 and 10th in the 3000. The Mid-Prairie quartet of Madeline Schrader, Amara Jones and Jovi and Tabitha Evans were ninth in the 4×200 and 21st in the 4×1. In their last team event, the Hawks were runners-up at Anamosa with event titles from Abby Fleming in the 1500, Ella Groenewold in high jump, the 4×100 team of Schrader, Jones, Jovi and Tabitha Evans and the shuttle hurdle with Jones, Ashlee Farrier, Emily Schlabach and Sophie Miller.
At their home Eckstrand Relays Thursday, the WACO boys won the team title on the strength of eight event championships including Simeon Reichenback in the 100, 110 hurdles and long jump, Mason Miller in high jump, Odee Shtefanchuk in discus, the 4×100 team of Braden Spain, Isaac Oswald, Mason Miller and Reichenbach, the 4×200 team of Spain, Oswald, Isaac Rich and Trey Edeker and the shuttle hurdle with Mason Miller, Louden Huisenga, Clayton Miller and Gage Samo. The WACO girls were fifth with a champion distance medley run from McKenzie Vradenberg, Halle Shellman, Zoey Dennler and Elyssa Graber.
Lone Tree will also be in Riverside tonight. Last performance for the Lions was at Roth Field for Eckstrand. The girls were second as a team with three championships. Rylee Shield won the 200, the 4×100 team of Vivian Zarabua, Ava Christofferson, Riley Krueger and Shield were a winner, as was the sprint medley of Sophie Bell, Zaruba, Christofferson and Shield. The boys placed sixth. The shuttle hurdle with Gabe Forbes, Harry Brenneman, Reece Holbrook and Tyce Alt was second.
Joining these area schools are Danville, Keokuk, Louisa-Muscatine and Tipton. Action starts tonight at 4p.m. in Riverside.
