It was a tough start to the week Monday for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk soccer teams as they dropped both ends of a River Valley double dip to the Iowa City Regina Regals. The Golden Hawk girls were beaten 5-1 in Iowa City. Regina jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Regals extended that advantage to 4-0 with two goals early in the second, before Sophia Baker scored her team leading eighth goal of the year for Mid-Prairie, on an Elise Gingerich assist, to make it 4-1. Regina would add one more before the close of the contest. The Regals outshot the Hawks 33-9 on the night, including 24-8 in shots on goal. Grace Gaarde had a hat trick to lead the Regals. Mid-Prairie keepers were busy with Kina Miller and Niva Helmuth combining for 17 saves. The loss drops Mid-Prairie to 8-4.
In the boys match in Wellman, it was the Regals by a 6-1 final. Regina led 3-1 at the break. Owen Trimpe had Mid-Prairie’s only goal, his team leading 12th this season. Regina had 17 total shots, eight on goal and six corners. Kyle Evans had a hat trick for the Regal attack. Jacob Flynn made six saves on the back line for Mid-Prairie. The loss drops the Golden Hawks to 7-5 this year. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls are both on the road Friday against Prince of Peace.
