Washington Demon soccer came up just short in a pair of thrillers with Burlington last night. After surrendering the opening goal in the 25th minute, the Washington boys were scoreless on the road until near the very end of regulation.
Demon junior Brayan Arreola powered a free kick in from about 30 yards out in the 78th minute to tie the game, and the match would stay level all the way through the end of regulation and both overtime periods. Arreola put the first of Washington’s penalty kicks in the back of the net, but the last three Demon PKs were turned away, allowing Burlington to win the penalty shootout 4-1 and take the match.
At Washington Wellness Park, the Demon girls saw the Greyhounds score what would be the match’s only goal in the fourth minute. Despite a few good looks, including a shot to tie in the final two minutes, Washington could not avoid a 1-0 defeat. The Demon girls finish Southeast Conference play with a 5-5 record and fall to 9-5 overall, while the boys are 6-4 in conference play and 8-5 overall. Both teams are off until Thursday, with the Washington boys next visiting Hillcrest and the Demon girls hosting Mid-Prairie.
