Area boys’ high school golfers take on the postseason today at sectional tournaments. A trio of Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams will be at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Wapello for a Class 1A sectional meet. That includes the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves, who have gotten a strong season from Carter Loyd. The junior has an average score of 86 strokes in 18-hole tournaments, second best in the field. WMU senior Andrew Brown has the eighth-best average score at 93 and will look to end his career on a high note.
One spot behind Brown is Highland junior Peyton Yeggy, who has been the Huskies’ top golfer with an average score of 95 and a season-low of 86 on 18 holes. Columbus senior Grant Watson has been a consistent presence inside the leaderboard’s top 20, shooting 97 on average and firing a low round of 92. The Wildcats, Highland and Winfield-Mount Union are joined by Wapello, New London, Danville, and Holy Trinity Catholic.
The Keota Eagles also will try to advance to districts in Class 1A when they go to Prairie Knolls Country Club in North Mahaska. Keota has won seven events this season behind a deep team. Sophomore Billie Kindred; juniors Sawyer Stout and Cole Kindred; and seniors Caden Sprouse, Aidan Anderson and Carsin Kindred all have average scores of 46 or lower in nine-hole competition. They’ll look to duplicate the 18-hole effort that brought them a team title at sectionals last season when they face HLV, North Mahaska, Moravia, Southeast Warren, Mormon Trail and Wayne.
