The Washington Demons have been a dominant force on the golf course this season, with the boys and girls’ teams combining to win all but four events they played in this spring. Now comes the biggest tournaments of the season, as the boys begin the postseason today and the girls play in the Southeast Conference Tournament.

The Demon boys will have the opportunity to host a Class 3A sectional tournament today at Washington Golf & Country Club. After reaching the state tournament last year, Roman Roth has continued his stellar play in his junior season. Roth has won four 18-hole tournaments this season and averages just over 73-and-a-half strokes in those competitions.

Two newcomers have also made a significant impact for Washington, as freshmen Rajan Roth and Drew Conrad have both averaged rounds in the high 30s on nine holes and right at 80 for 18. That includes low rounds of 73 and 75 in tournaments, respectively, for Roth and Conrad, numbers they hope to duplicate against Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Oskaloosa, Pella and Burlington Notre Dame.

The Demon girls have not dropped a conference meet yet this season and have only finished worse than first place twice. Washington has been paced by seniors Makenna Conrad and Kaylin Long. After being integral parts of Washington’s team state title two years ago and both finishing in the top 20 at state last year, Conrad and Long have played at a high level again in their final season.

Conrad has been a force on the links, shooting an 18-hole average of 84 with a low round of 76. Long has averaged an score of 89 in 18-hole play and will look to duplicate her performance from last year’s conference tournament, when she joined Conrad in the top five overall by finishing one stroke behind her 83.

Freshman Adalyn Long has also been an all-conference-level performer in her debut season for the Demons, shooting just under 90 on average. Washington will try to add the Southeast Conference Tournament title to their trophy case when they face Burlington, Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant, Keokuk and host Fairfield.
