Washington Demon boys’ soccer used a dominant second half to defeat the Hillcrest Academy Ravens 5-1 Thursday night in Kalona. It was actually Hillcrest that grabbed the initial lead. After a scoreless first 39 minutes, sophomore Phoenix Anderson scored his second goal of the season to give the Ravens the lead going into halftime.
But Washington responded with the tying goal from junior Manny Raymundo four minutes into the second half, and after freshman Edwin Cortes put a feed from junior Joshua Perez into the back of the net for the lead in the 55th minute, the Demons were off and running. Raymundo scored again one minute later, while junior Lane Schrock added goals in the 59th and 78th minutes.
Hillcrest finishes the regular season by falling to 4-6, while Washington improves to 9-5. Next up for both teams is the postseason. While the Demons are off until their first playoff game May 22nd, the Ravens will play in the first round of Class 1A Substate 6 Monday when they travel to Central Lee.
