At their May 2 meeting, the Louisa County Board of Supervisors agreed to appoint their next county auditor, when current auditor, Sandi Sturgell, retires at the end of the month.

Rationale for appointment rather than holding a special election is to save taxpayers the cost of an election. Despite this decision, county voters still have the power to force a special election to fill the vacancy. To do this, a petition must receive a minimum of 356 signatures of eligible county voters. Said petition must then be submitted by the May 24 deadline.

Should county voters decide not to file a petition, the Board of Supervisors will make their appointment at their meeting on Tuesday, May 30. Whether they are voted in, or appointed, Sturgell’s replacement will serve in the auditor role until the next election in 2024.
