U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke with KCII News about the TORNADO Act and its potential impact on Iowa. “It’s a bill that I would say would upgrade NOAA, doing a better job of predicting tornadoes and maybe any disastrous weather situation. There are certain tools that they have available that they haven’t used yet, and this would provide for. They would have to set up a task force and a plan to do it. In times of tornadoes and other natural disasters, a few minutes is very important to save lives. We’re trying to get NOAA in situations where they see that they can tell people about the potential dangers much sooner than they do today.” The TORNADO Act would establish a Hazard Risk Communication Office to simplify and improve the communication of alerts, along with a pilot program to test the effectiveness of implementing new techniques for hazardous weather communication. It would also require the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to prepare and submit an action plan for the national implementation of high-resolution probabilistic guidance for tornado forecasting and prediction.
