In the midst of a superb season, Washington Demon boys’ golf is on the cusp of another milestone achievement as the team heads to Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella for a Class 3A district tournament today. If they can duplicate their team scoring championship from last week’s sectional meet they hosted at Washington Golf & Country Club, the Demons will qualify for the 3A state tournament as a team for a second consecutive season.
Plenty of individual talent eyeing a trip to state has been the key to Washington’s success. Junior Roman Roth won an individual sectional title last week and won his fifth 18-hole tournament of the season by shooting a five-over-par 77. But Roth has been even better than that, averaging a score of 74 strokes in 18-hole competition and going as low as a two-under 70 twice.
Freshmen Rajan Roth and Drew Conrad have both had outstanding debuts this spring, with each shooting in the low 80s per 18 holes. Roth has gone as low as 73 and was the runner-up at sectionals with an 80, while Conrad will try to better his 83 from last week.
Senior Isaac Vetter and juniors Teague Meyer and Luke Beenblossom all shot 91 or better at sectionals and have all averaged scores of 94 or lower per 18 holes. It’s resulted in Washington winning all but two events this season. The Demons look for one more victory and a trip to state against a field featuring players from Pella, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Oskaloosa, Williamsburg, Grinnell, Knoxville, Newton and South Tama.
